Grammy-nominated jazz drummer Sammy Miller and his band The Congregation are reviving a forgotten American tradition, the traveling medicine show. This concert features music from The Last Medicine Show, an Ars Nova commission from Sammy Miller & Kevin Armento, chock full of foot-stomping music, gut-busting comedy routines and special tonics that will cure what ails you.

Kevin Armento

Kevin Armento is a Brooklyn-based writer originally from San Diego. His plays include BETS & BLUE NOTES (San Diego Lyceum Theatre), COMPANION PIECE (Pleasance, London), and KILLERS (Tom Noonan’s Paradise Factory). His work has also been performed or developed with Seattle Repertory Theatre, Rogue Machine Theatre, Ugly Rhino, INTAR, Last Frontier Theatre Conference, Theatre503 in London, and Ars Nova. He was an inaugural member of Fresh Ground Pepper’s PlayGroup, and is the recipient of a commission from the Abingdon Theatre. A WAY TO REACH ME was previously read at the New Ohio and will have a workshop presentation with Naked Angels this summer. Kevin’s screenplays have received honors from Slamdance, Action on Film Festival, New York City Horror Film Festival, and Los Angeles International Film Festival, and his work has also been featured on Glamour, Yahoo, and The Huffington Post.

Sammy Miller

Juilliard trained-Grammy®️ nominated drummer Sammy Miller has been hailed as “the perfect player scholar” (The Wall Street Journal). From Lincoln Center to The White House, to the Aspen Ideas Festival, to TEDx, to The Newport Jazz Festival, with special guests including Jon Batiste and Wynton Marsalis, Miller’s band, Sammy Miller and The Congregation, has headlined the most prominent Jazz festivals for over a decade. The Congregation specializes in joyful jazz – music that feels good. After working with over 60,000 students in 45 states, Miller launched the music education platform PLAYBOOK – @playbookjazz 

Caitlin Sullivan

Caitlin Sullivan is a director and theater maker. Recent work includes Nova (Obehi Janice/The Royal Lyceum Theatre), WORK HARD HAVE FUN MAKE HISTORY (ruth tang/Clubbed Thumb), The Good John Proctor (Talene Monahon/Bedlam), and Sanctuary City (Martyna Majok/NYTW). Caitlin is a frequent collaborator of the Bengsons. She helped develop Hundred Days (NYTW) and The Lucky Ones (Ars Nova) and is currently directing and developing Ohio. Caitlin co-founded and was the Artistic Director of Seattle’s critically-acclaimed Satori Group. Next Up: United States vs Gupta (Deepali Gupta/JACK).

This show will take place at Ars Nova, located at 511 W 54th Street, New York, NY 10019.

What is the seating set-up & how do I get the best seats?

Seating is general admission and first-come first-served. So, the earlier you arrive at the theater, the more choice you’ll have about where you sit! (Bonus: cheapest drinks in Midtown are at Bars Nova!)

How does Name Your Price tix work?

Once you’ve selected your performance date and time at check-out, you’ll see a number of ticket price options ranging from $5 to $100. Select the price point you want to pay and the number of tickets you’d like to purchase and they’ll be added to your cart. After that, continue through the check-out process and you’ll be all set!

Are there ticket fees?

Yes. The processing fees are charged by our ticketing and credit card processors, and increase along with the base price of your ticket.

Can I stream this show online?

Yes! Ars Nova Supra is our digital platform where you can live stream all of our one-night shows and watch premieres from the past year on-demand. For the low price of $15/mo, you can access an entire seasons worth of comedy, music and theater from our groundbreaking artists, and additionally you can cancel your subscription anytime!

What is your refund/exchange policy?

All sales are final – there are no refunds or exchanges.

If you’re unable to use your tickets, you may donate them in exchange for a letter of tax credit by emailing tix@arsnovanyc.com.

What if I feel sick?

We ask that you stay home if you aren’t feeling well or are awaiting the results of a COVID test. Please let us know prior to your ticketed performance, and we will work with you to find a solution if you’re unable to attend.

 

What are your COVID safety protocols?

We welcome and encourage mask-wearing to protect yourself and others. However, as mask mandates have lifted and city, state and federal guidelines have changed, we will not be requiring them at performances.

We no longer require proof of vaccination, but we strongly encourage all audience members to get vaccinated and boosted in accordance with public health guidelines.

Our staff will clean and sanitize the theater and common areas and we’ll continue to provide hand sanitizer for your personal use.

Signage is posted in all spaces encouraging washing or sanitizing hands frequently.
