In homage to the motley cultural mix that is the Western rodeo are four exciting servings of folk music. Meet Jacob Jolliff, an award-winning mandolinist who plays everything from bluegrass to unlikely pop and CRYS for Short, a banjo-guitarist known for her ethereal and groovy honky-tonk. To burn it down at the end of the night is Guachinangos, a NYC-based band fusing Mexican Son Jarocho with Colombian Cumbia. Opening up the night is Willie Quintana of Tambor y Caña, an experimental Afro-Venezuelan music project, on the cuatro.

Jacob Jolliff is one of the world’s premier contemporary mandolinists. In 2011, he graduated from Berklee College of Music, having studied there on a full scholarship. The following year, in 2012, he won the USA’s National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, KS. A fixture of the bluegrass scene, he has performed and collaborated with Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka, Michael Daves, Grant Gordy, Wes Corbett, and Alex Hargreaves, to name a few. Additionally, throughout his 20s, he toured as a member of the groups Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band. Currently, his focus is on his own ensemble, The Jacob Jolliff Band—one of the most cutting-edge progressive bluegrass groups on the scene today. They’ve released three albums, the most recent of which, “Instrumentals, Vol. 2: Mandolin Mysteries,” dropped in May 2024. The band plays a combination of complex original instrumental music and vocal repertoire that spans from trad bluegrass to unlikely pop covers. Improvisation and the ensemble interplay are at the forefront.
There was a woman, known simply as Miss Jim, who played guitar and drank whiskey deep in the hills; her lyrics and musicality made her a legend in the countryside. Decades later, her great-granddaughter picked up an old guitar, and followed the calling of her roots. Playing Cosmic Country and Honky Tonk Music, CRYS draws from iconic influences like Patsy Cline, Curtis Mayfield, Elizabeth Cotten, and The Chicks. “Ethereal, groovy, and sometimes meditative” songs are woven together by evocative songwriting, deft banjo playing, and rich soulful vocals.
Cumbia with a Mexican Jarocho flavor, Guachinangos features members from diverse cultural backgrounds. The band fuses Mexican son jarocho with Colombian cumbia and other Latin American rhythms. Their exciting instrumentation and electrifying stage energy invites anybody to enjoy, sing and move to the rhythm of the music.
Willie Quintana is the Musical Director of Tambor y Caña, a project devoted to preserving and promoting Afro-Venezuelan music and culture. He is also the founder and director of ETAPA, the School of Afro-Venezuelan and Afro-Latin Percussion, where he trains and inspires new generations of percussionists and cultural ambassadors.As the driving force behind Tamborellas, Willie Quintana has created an educational and artistic platform that promotes gender equality by encouraging and empowering women to participate in Afro-Venezuelan music. In addition, he serves as promoter and director of San Juan NYC, representing and preserving the Afro-Venezuelan San Juan celebration in New York, creating a cultural bridge that keeps these traditions alive within the Venezuelan diaspora and the broader multicultural community.

Ars Nova is wheelchair accessible. If you wish or need to remain in your wheelchair throughout the show, our staff will remove the theater chair. This can be done by letting us know your needs/plans in advance; just email Taylor Rey. It can also be done without prior notice when you arrive! If you wish to transfer to the theater seat from your wheelchair, we are happy to store your wheelchair or motorized mobility aid in the lobby during the performance. The House Manager will return your mobility device to you at the end of the performance as this show has no intermission.
About 25% of the seating is on the ground floor of the theater and does not require using stairs to access. There are five six-inch steps to get into the building.
All remaining seats require no less than one and no more than three steps to access.
Licensed service animals (any dogs that are trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities) are welcome at Ars Nova. They must rest in your seating area throughout the performance and are unable to occupy the aisle. Please bring proof of certification or a license for your service animal and be prepared to present it to the House Manager upon request. You can send advance notice to tix@arsnovanyc.com, which is appreciated, but not required.
Our bathrooms are stalled, all gender restrooms – everyone is welcome to use any bathroom of their choice. We have two single-person restrooms in the lobby; with the wheelchair accessible option located right outside the theater on the first floor (doors 7 feet 10 inches x 3 feet 10.5 inches).
We have space that can be made to offer privacy for feeding should you need at any time. See the House Manager onsite and they will arrange a comfortable space, with storage and refrigeration for your materials.
The audience seating locations could be in, around and throughout the playing area. Performers will be within 3’ of you.
