The history of genocide, displacement, and dispossession of the Lenape peoples is the brutal origin story of Manhattan. The agricultural peoples of Lenapehoking cared for the land, waters, and the ancestors by paying respect to the Shad fish of the water, the Shadbush of the land, and the stars in the sky. We honor the generations of displaced and enslaved people that built, and continue to build, the country that we occupy. Ars Nova operates on the unceded land of the Lenape peoples on the island of Mannahatta in Lenapehoking, the Lenape Homeland. Join us in our shared responsibility; to consider our way forward in reconciliation, decolonization, anti-racism, and allyship by asking yourself the following questions.
What is your intent being on this land and in this community?
How will you replace the things you take from here?
How will you carry the knowledge of the Native People into the work that you do?
How will you increase native power and redress?
