“URGBook”

Good Morning, America! Today’s assigned reading is the Underground Railroad Game Companion Book. Part graphic novel, part screenplay, part lesson plan — there’s more to this experimental-anti-script than meets the eye. As with the original Off-Broadway production, the “trajectory of this underground railroad is from blithe, barbed self-consciousness to the subconscious, where land mines you pretended didn’t exist keep exploding” (NY Times). Created by Jennifer Kidwell and Scott R. Sheppard (the original creator/performers of the stage play) in collaboration with illustrator Noah Mease and layout designer Rochelle Torres, the Underground Railroad Game Companion Book transforms the “wayward words” of its “taboo-flouting script” (Time Out New York) into a unique reading experience; a fun-house mirror version of watching the play’s explosive blend of styles.
