THE WRITER’S ROOM
In 2012, Ars Nova partnered with Manhattan Theatre Club to create The Writer’s Room, a new program to commission, develop and support playwrights in the process of creating new work for the stage. Through this program we jointly commission four playwrights each year, giving them comprehensive development support with an eye toward full production in The Studio at Stage II, MTC’s 150-seat Off-Broadway theater at New York City Center. This partnership presents a great opportunity for the amazing talent in our artist community and an exciting way for Ars Nova to expand and extend our support for them.
In 2008, MTC and Ars Nova collaborated on the acclaimed world premiere of Liz Flahive’s From Up Here, which was developed in Ars Nova’s Play Group, Out Loud and Next Step programs, before being co-produced with MTC at New York City Center. The Writer’s Room is modeled on that successful collaboration, drawing on our two organizations’ complementary strengths. Ars Nova brings hands-on experience with commissioning and developing new work, while MTC has decades of expertise producing award-winning new plays. Together we will bring together a terrific mix of artists each year and use our joint expertise to shepherd new work to the stage.
The commissioned writers for 2013-2014 are Rachel Bonds, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, Jackie Sibblies Drury, and the band of actors, musicians, and storytellers known as PigPen Theatre Co.
They join 2012-2013 commissioned writers Adam Bock and Justin Levine, collaborating on the creation of a new musical, Thomas Bradshaw, Samuel D. Hunter and Sharyn Rothstein.
