ABOUT THE ARTISTS

STARR BUSBY is a singer, songwriter, actor and composer from Houston, TX. You may have seen Starr fronting Brooklyn based experimental soul band People’s Champs (peopleschamps.com) or supporting artists such as The Gorillaz, Esperanza Spalding, X Ambassadors and Alice Smith. Selected appearances include: OCTET (Paula;Signature Theatre); Apollo Cafe Live: Soul Cypher; #BlackGirlMagic Show (Jack; composer/performer); Sex Status 2.0 (Composer/Performer); Mikrokosmos (Steirischer Herbst, Graz and Nottingham Contemporary); The Girl with the Incredible Feeling (Soloist/Spoleto Festival di Mondi); as well as various concerts and solo shows. Starr also enjoys working as an arts educator through organizations such as Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project, Beats 4 Peace, Exploring the Arts and Brooklyn Music School. She is looking forward to continuing the development of (pray) with nicHi douglas and Jerome Ellis at Ars Nova. Her music is available via all streaming services and Bandcamp.

JEROME ELLIS is an Afro-Caribbean composer, improviser and theater artist originally from Virginia Beach and based in New York City. His concerts, performances and texts are invitations to healing, transcendence, communion and deep listening. Through an interdisciplinary practice that focuses on oral storytelling, improvisation and the interrelations between speech, silence, disability and religion, he’s collaborated with choreographers, rappers, playwrights, booksellers, typographers, podcasters, filmmakers and toddlers. He and storyteller James Harrison Monaco form the music-storytelling duo James & Jerome; they’re currently developing a commissioned piece for Ars Nova. He’s also co-composing nicHi douglas’ Ars Nova commission with composer Starr Busby. Mr. Ellis is also a piano tuner and teacher, as well as a translator from Portuguese.
