The Wikipedia PlaysFriday, August 03, 2007 through Monday, August 06, 2007 What is “The Defenestration of Prague”? And how is it seventeen steps removed from “Castration Anxiety”? Wikipedia knows. In this brave new world of instant gratification where the internet can live in your pocket, one group of writers has created a mini-marathon of short plays that surf the wikipedia wave through seventeen related entries. Written by Ars Nova’s 2006-2007 Play Group Writers: Mike Batistick, Evan Cabnet, Ron Fitzgerald, Liz Flahive, Sam Forman, Etan Frankel, Kyle Jarrow, Nick Jones, Barry Levey, Carly Mensch, Elizabeth Meriwether, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rachel Shukert, Mat Smart, Aurin Squire, Adam Szymkowicz and Beau Willimon Directed by: Evan Cabnet, Michael Goldfried, Maria Goyanes, Meredith McDonough, Shira Milikowsky and Moritz Von Stuelpnagel ABOUT PLAY GROUP: Play Group is a vibrant and eclectic group of emerging writers who gather twice a month at Ars Nova to share new work and get peer feedback. The group offers members the chance to develop their plays with peer support; to be inspired by each other’s work; to form collaborative relationships; and to build a strong sense of community within Ars Nova. BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP: Play Group members become a part of the Ars Nova community of artists. Members receive dramaturgical support and artistic match-making advice from the Ars Nova artistic staff; priority consideration for the Out Loud reading series; recommendations for prizes and fellowships; invitations to Ars Nova shows and events; and industry exposure through a culminating group production at Ars Nova. We will present the show created by members of Play Group 2008 in January of 2009. SELECTION CRITERIA: All emerging playwrights are eligible to apply. In selecting new members, we will take into account the strength of the submitted play, what the writer stands to gain from membership at this point in his or her career, and the overall balance of voices and styles within the group. Women and writers of color are encouraged to apply. Writers must be available to attend meetings at Ars Nova every other Wednesday night while the group is in session, and for the culminating group project. While we understand that playwrights may occasionally have professional commitments that would conflict with a meeting, regular attendance and a serious commitment to the group are required and are a condition of membership. Applications are accepted each fall. Once selected, new members will be invited to join for a period of one year beginning in January. At the end of the one-year term, writers may express interest in returning to the group for one additional year. HOW TO APPLY: Applications for Play Group 2008 are now closed. Please check back in the summer for information on Play Group 2009. |

UNCHARTED: REBECCA HARTWith her sultry and complex sound, Rebecca Hart breathes fire into every compelling lyric she sings while playing the hell out of her guitar! Often considered a powerful, funky take on the coffehouse folk singer, Hart has a rocker’s soul with something to say and she knows how to get her point across. Add in drama and the occasional power chord and you might just think she is the love child of Suzanne Vega and Steely Dan. UNCHARTED blasts through industry blockades, providing a forum for burgeoning singer/songwriters to perform their original music in front of a live audience. Focusing on emerging talents who have yet to break the Billboard 100, this series sets out to cover a wide range of styles while providing music lovers and industry taste-makers an introduction to exciting new music. |
