ABOUT ARS NOVA
Ars Nova exists to discover, develop and launch singular theater, music and comedy artists in the early stages of their professional careers. Our dynamic slate of programs supports outside-the-box thinking and encourages innovative, genre-bending work. Dubbed by The New York Times as a “fertile incubator of offbeat theater,” Ars Nova blurs genres and subverts the status quo. With our feverish bounty of programming, we are the stomping ground and launching pad for visionary, adventurous artists of all stripes. By providing a protective environment where risk-taking and collaboration are paramount, Ars Nova gives voice to a new generation of diverse artists and audiences, pushing the boundaries of live entertainment by nurturing creative ideas into smart, surprising new work.

THE WRITER'S ROOM, MTC & ARS NOVA'S COMMISSIONING PARTNERSHIP
Each year Ars Nova and Manhattan Theatre Club jointly select four playwrights to receive Writer’s Room Commissions. Commissioned writers come together to participate in a two-year program designed to encourage artistic risk-taking in a supportive and sustaining environment, with an eye toward production in The Studio at Stage II, MTC’s 150 seat Off-Broadway theater. The partnership draws on each organization’s strengths and areas of expertise to create a unique, collaborative development program for advancing new work from commission through to production.
In 2008, MTC and Ars Nova collaborated on the acclaimed world premiere of Liz Flahive’s From Up Here, which was developed in Ars Nova’s Play Group, Out Loud and Next Step programs, before being co-produced with MTC at New York City Center. The Writer’s Room is modeled on that successful collaboration, drawing on our two organizations’ complementary strengths. Ars Nova brings hands-on experience with commissioning and developing new work, while MTC has decades of expertise producing award-winning new plays. Together we will bring together a terrific mix of artists each year and use our joint expertise to shepherd new work to the stage.
The commissioned writers for 2013-2014 are Rachel Bonds, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, Jackie Sibblies Drury, and the band of actors, musicians, and storytellers known as PigPen Theatre Co. They join 2012-2013 commissioned writers Adam Bock and Justin Levine, collaborating on the creation of a new musical, Thomas Bradshaw, Samuel D. Hunter and Sharyn Rothstein.
