Ars Nova’s partnership with the Urban Assembly Academy of Arts & Letters

OVERVIEW/VISION

Founded in 2006, SCRIPT & STAGE is a theater education program designed by Ars Nova in partnership with The Urban Assembly Academy of Arts & Letters, a 6-12 school located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The program aims to introduce Arts & Letters students to the various theatrical tools they can use to express themselves, and to guide them towards a deeper understanding of the many ways in which one can tell a story on stage.

SCRIPT & STAGE seeks to instill a greater sense of confidence in the students as they explore their own artistic creativity. In addition, the program strives to nurture a sense of community and teamwork among the students as they work together to build their own show. Finally, SCRIPT & STAGE works to develop and cultivate the way students look at and think about theatrical events so that they will become active and engaged theatergoers as well as theater creators.

Ars Nova’s partnership with Arts & Letters marks the first milestone for our education and community outreach department.

Script & Stage, 6th Grade/Year 1: GOALS

1. To expose the students to the theatrical discipline of playwriting.
2. To establish a safe environment in which the students can explore the various theatrical tools introduced to them.
3. To challenge the students to use their imaginations and physical selves in new and creative ways.
4. To provide the students with an opportunity to perform an original work of their creation.
5. To give students at least one opportunity to see a live performance and provide them with a forum in which to freely discuss and critique what they saw.
