Ars Nova was founded in memory of Gabe Wiener in 2002 to provide a welcome home for young artists and audiences alike. In 2005 Ars Nova became a 501(c)(3) Not-For-Profit Organization. In addition to Ars Nova’s vast array of development programs for emerging artists, we’re also committed to commissioning new work and producing world premieres.

William Ralston Fellow at the 2011 Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Bonds has served as a Volunteer at the 52nd Street Project and as a dramaturg for the 2015 Young Playwrights Conference in NYC. She is a graduate of Brown University.
Rachel was recently named the 2016 Tow Foundation Playwright in Residence at Ars Nova. Upcoming projects include the world premiere of SWIMMERS at Marin Theatre Company, directed by Mike Donahue, in March 2016.
KEVIN ARMENTO’s plays include please excuse my dear aunt sally (59E59, upcoming); Good Men Wanted (Ars Nova’s ANT Fest 2014); killers (Tom Noonan’s Paradise Factory); a way to reach me(Naked Angels); and Companion Piece (The Pleasance, London). SAM CHANSE‘s work includes Fruiting Bodies, Delivery, gilgamesh & the mosquito (with composer Bob Kelly), about that whole dying thing, Lydia’s Funeral Video (published by Kaya Press), and Asian American Jesus. A 2015-16 Playwrights Realm Writing Fellow, Sundance/Ucross Playwright, and MacDowell Fellow, her work has also been supported by Ma-Yi Theater, The Lark, Leviathan Lab, EST/Sloan, the Claque, Yale Institute of Music Theatre, NYU’s CDP series, 2g, and Labyrinth. She is a member of the Ma-Yi Writers Lab and Civilians’ 2015-16 R&D Group, and was recognized on the Kilroys’ 2015 List. MILO CRAMER is a playwright and co-founder of New Saloon theater company. Milo’s plays include Cute Activist (SoHo Rep Writer/Director Lab), William Shakespeare’s Mom (The Brick, Ars Nova’s ANT Fest, Williamstown Theater Festival Young Director’s series), and I’m Miserable But Change Scares Me (Lincoln Center Director’s Lab, The Brick). With New Saloon, Milo co-created Three Translations of Uncle Vanya at the Same Time (The Invisible Dog, Mabou Mines / SUITE Resident Artist Program, The Tank, Bard Live Arts), Cooking To Me Is Poetry (Galapagos Art Space) and Buster Keaton’s Ride… (Dixon Place). Milo presented a piece called Tragedy, co-created with Ariel Stess, Claire Moodey, and Max Cramer, at Danspace and Brooklyn Arts Exchange. MICHAEL YATES CROWLEY is a Brooklyn-based writer and performer whose work has been produced in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Berlin, Edinburgh, and elsewhere. His works for theater include Song of a Convalescent Ayn Rand Giving Thanks to the Godhead (American Repertory Theater, Joe’s Pub); temping (premiered at the 53rd New York Film Festival); Evanston: A Rare Comedy (2013 O’Neill NPC selection, 2015 Alliance/Kendeda Finalist); The Rape of the Sabine Women, by Grace B. Matthias (UMASS New Play Lab 2015); and The Ted Haggard Monologues (published by S. Fischer Verlag; filmed by HBO). In New York, his work has been seen at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub/The Public Theater, Signature Theatre, Rattlestick, 59E59 Theaters, PS 122, the Bushwick Starr, and Ars Nova. He is a Writing Fellow at The Playwrights Realm, a NYFA Playwriting fellow, a past member of the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, and graduate of the Lila Acheson Wallace Playwrights Program at Juilliard. EMMA GOIDEL‘s work has been developed or produced at the Playwrights Realm, InterAct Theatre Company, New York Stage & Film, the Playwrights’ Center, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Tiny Dynamite, and Òran Mór in Scotland. She is a founding member of Orbiter 3, a Core Playwright at InterAct and a Playwrights Realm Writing Fellow.
TRISH HARNETIAUX‘s plays include If You Can Get To Buffalo (The Acme Corporation, Incubator Arts Project, Son of Semele Ensemble); Welcome to the White Room (Glass Mind Theatre); How To Get Into Buildings (Soho Rep. Lab). She is developing her new play Weren’t You In My Science Class? (2014 Prelude Festival) and has been a resident at MacDowell, Yaddo and The Millay Colony. MFA in playwriting at Brooklyn College.
TONY MENESES will receive a world premiere of his play Guadalupe in the Guest Room in February at Two River Theater, for whom he is also under commission. Currently a 2014/2015 Playwrights Realm Writing Fellow; previously developed at The Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Claque and the LARK Playwrights’ Week. He is the recipient of the 2010 Kennedy Center ACTF Latino Playwriting Award (Las Hermanas Padilla). Alumni: Youngblood at EST. MFA: Iowa Playwrights Workshop. BA: UT Austin.
ANTOINETTE NWANDU is a Brooklyn-based playwright via Los Angeles. Her plays include Flat Sam(winner of the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award and the NEC’s Douglas Turner Ward Prize) and Pass Over. Honors include being named a Dramatists Guild Fellow, a Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference Literary Fellow and winner of the Tisch departmental fellowship.
ERIKA SHEFFER’s play Russian Transport received its world premiere at The New Group (Outer Critics Circle nomination) and regional premiere at Steppenwolf. Recipient of The Vineyard Theatre’s Paula Vogel Playwriting award and a member of SPACE on Ryder Farm’s Working Farm Group. Other plays include Point Shoot Score and Something in Your Stomach, produced by The Samuel French Short Play Festival. Commissions from Steppenwolf and published by Dramatist Play Service. KATE TARKER‘s plays include THUNDERBODIES, An Almanac for Farmers and Lovers in Mexico (2015 Kilroys List), and Laura and the Sea (nominated for the L. Arnold Weissberger award). Ensemble generated work includes Good Job Horses (A Majestic Comedy) with Theatre Forever, and The Most Beautiful Thing in the World at the Yale Cabaret. Her work has been produced or developed by Primary Stages/ESPA at 59E59 Theaters, the Playwrights’ Center, The Southern Theater in Minneapolis, LOCAL lab in Boulder, Theater Masters in Aspen/NYC, Nautilus Music-Theater, and the National New Play Network at the Kennedy Center. She is the recipient of a Jerome Fellowship, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, a Tofte Lake Center residency, and the Kennedy Center’s National Science Playwriting Award. 2015-2018 Core Writer at the Playwrights’ Center. JAMES TYLER has a MFA in Film from Howard University and a MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University where his concentration was Playwriting. Selected honors include the Paul Robeson Award and John Golden Award for Excellence in Playwriting. His plays have been developed at La MaMa and Berkshire Playwrights Lab (Some Old Black Man), Classical Theatre of Harlem (The Drop Off), Open Bar Theatricals and Blackboard Playwrights Group (Dolphins and Sharks). He’s a proud member of Harlem’s Emerging Black Playwrights Group, a 2014-2015 Dramatists Guild Fellow, and currently a Playwriting Fellow at The Juilliard School and The Playwrights Center’s Many Voices Fellow.
WILL ARONSON has written the scores for Bungee Jump (multiple Seoul productions; Best Score, Korean Musical Awards); Mother, Me & the Monsters (Barrington Stage; Boston Globe Critic’s Pick); My Scary Girl (Best Musical, NYMF 2009); The Trouble With Doug (TheatreWorks Palo Alto); and the upcoming Hansel & Gretl & Heidi & Günter (Chicago Shakespeare Theater commission; 2014 NAMT grant).
SARAH HAMMOND recently completed a seven-year residency at New Dramatists. Her plays include Green Girl (SPF ’08 at The Public); House on Stilts (South Coast Repertory Commission, National Theatre Residency); Kudzu (Trustus); and others. Her musicals are Barefoot Persephone(Johnny Mercer Colony at Goodspeed) and String (NAMT ’14, New Dramatists Loewe Prize, O’Neill National Music Theater Conference, Weston New Musicals Award, Oscar Hammerstein Festival selection). RACHEL CHAVKIN is a director, writer and Artistic Director of Brooklyn-based experimental ensemble the TEAM. Recent collaborations include Dave Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (Ars Nova); folksinger Anaïs Mitchell’s upcoming Hadestown; and Uncharted partner Heather Christian and the TEAM’s Mission Drift (PS122, London’s National Theatre). 2010 and 2013 OBIE Award, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Nominations for Best Direction, and 2013 Doris Duke Impact Award Nominee. She is directing the spring 2015 Ars Nova world premiere of Small Mouth Soundsby Bess Wohl.
HEATHER CHRISTIAN is a composer/performer last seen making scores for and performing in Mission Drift (winner of 2011 Fringe First and Herald Angel) at the National Theatre in London (Drama League, Outstanding Performance Nomination). Composing credits include Gertrude Stein’s The World Is Round (BAM, 2014 OBIE citation); Of Mice and Men (The West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds); The Burnin’ (Progress Theatre); her own multi-media concert North (LaMama); Daily Life Everlasting (Norwegian Theatre Academy); Mud (IAmA Theatre Company); Learning in Lower Animals (DTW); and numerous compositions for short films and dance pieces including Gregory Go Boom, which took the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year. She has worked with many theater makers including the TEAM, Jane Comfort Company, Mac Wellman, Big Dance Theater, Taylor Mac and Witness Relocation Company, of whom she is a core member. She was recently named one of Time Out New York’s “Downtown Innovators To Watch.” Primarily a songstress with her band Heather Christian & the Arbornauts, she can be seen all over the world avant-torching. Her album Cabinet was released in 2012 to much critical acclaim and she and the Arbornauts just released their sophomore record, House/Hymn.

AKIN SALAWU is a two-time Tribeca All Access Winner with a BA from Stanford and a Screenwriting MFA from Columbia. Akin was also a member of The Public Theater’s Inaugural Emerging Writers Group and wrote Chapter 5 in the book, “The Obama Movement.”

VICTOR LESNIEWSKI’s plays include Cloven Tongues (The Wild Project); Where Bison Run (Out Loud at Ars Nova); Amid Purpleheart (Geva Workshop Reading); Couriers and Contrabands(NYTW Staged Presentation); Pipistrellus (DG Fellowship); Khardal (Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor). He was the only American to be shortlisted for the inaugural Theatre503 Playwriting Award, which included six writers culled from over 1600 applicants.

JACOB YANDURA is the composer of The Last Queen of Canaan, Feral and a commission from New York City Children’s Theater, Wringer, based on the novel by Jerry Spinelli. MICHAEL McQUILKEN runs a film company (Q Motion Pictures), records and produces music (as The Few Moments) and directs live performance projects and theater. He is currently directingEpiphany (an immersive music, film and theater installation that will premier at BAM in 2015). Other directing work includes the Theatre is Evil World Tour (a theatrical rock show performed by Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra), Room No. 35 (an installation concerto by composer Paola Prestini with artwork by Erika Harrsch), Machine Makes Man (also written by Michael with Adina Verson, winner of the Gold Prize for international theatre performance at Fringe Amsterdam, 2013) and an original play with music that he scored, scripted and directed entitledJib. Musical scores include The Tale (book by Tommy Smith), The Dumpling Lady (book by Susan Stanton) and Bones in the Basket (dir. Devin Brain). MAX VERNON is a composer/lyricist, playwright and performer. This past year he was a Dramatist Guild Theater Fellow, an artist in residence at Rhinebeck Writer’s Retreat, a JFund award recipient, and also finished his first commission for Disney Creative Entertainment. He has performed over one hundred concerts in New York City, including sold out shows at Joe’s Pub (Frisk Me: The Songs of Max Vernon) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Civilians’ Let Me Ascertain You). His musicals include The View UpStairs (NYU, Pride Films and Plays) and WIRED (Ars Nova). Developing: Co-Op (Ars Nova, Naked Angels); Aesop’s Fables (Theatreworks USA); WAM! THE MAD ONES (Company-in-Residence) are a New York City-based company dedicated to creating visceral, ensemble-driven, highly detailed theatrical experiences that examine and illuminate American nostalgia. They devise plays through the ongoing collaboration of performers/writers, designers, and director, with each artist playing an essential role in a piece’s creation from the inception. Their productions appropriate popular American genres, playfully re-imagine world history, and incorporate live music in service of a delicately woven, wholly articulated, character-driven universe. ANNIE TIPPE is a director, performer and deviser of new work. Annie is a member of the Williamstown Directing Corps and a frequent collaborator of NYC-based event series “Fresh Ground Pepper”. 2015 Drama League Directing Fellow.
JOHN EARLY (Comedy Curator) is an actor, writer and comedian who has been described as “endearingly honest and absurdly funny” by The New York Times; “A cross between Dennis the Menace and Christopher Guest” by PAPER Magazine; and most impressively, “cute and young and blonde” by The Huffington Post. He’ll be appearing soon in Neighbors 2 opposite Dave Franco and The Disaster Artist opposite Sharon Stone, as well as the upcoming Netflix original series Love executive produced by Judd Apatow. Early recently created and starred in a comedy special for Netflix, playing a variety of original characters, and he’ll be a guest star in season five of HBO’s Girls. His previous credits include Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, Broad City, High Maintenance, Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, 30 Rock, and the indie features Fort Tilden (SXSW Grand Jury Prize) and Other People (selected to premiere as a Day One Film at Sundance in 2016). He also lent his voice to the upcoming HBO animated series Animals and was a writer on season 4 of truTV’s Billy on the Street.
Early was an Artist in Residence and is the Comedy Curator at Ars Nova, where he hosts the monthly variety show Showgasm. He was named one of the Ten Best Comedians of 2015 by Time Out NY, 50 Comedians to Watch in 2015 by Vulture, and one of the Top Ten Downtown Cabaret Performers in New York by Time Out New York. John performs his solo show Literally Me (New York Times Critics’ Pick) at Joe’s Pub, a live sketch show Hey™ with frequent collaborator Kate Berlant, co-hosts a weekly stand up show at Cake Shop, and has been a part numerous comedy festivals including Just For Laughs, South by Southwest, Riot LA, Treasure Island Music Festival and Festival Supreme. John is from Nashville, Tennessee and a graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, where he studied at the Atlantic Acting School.
