TnT: Igniting the Future showcases songs from four musicals created by the 2017 Jonathan Larson Grant-winning duo Ty Defoe and Tidtaya Sinutoke. Ty ‘n Tidtaya invoke the silenced voices from the land on which we stand: immigrants, Indigenous peoples, women and queer folx! Spanning their award-winning creations to their newest collaborations, TnT honor their culture while telling stories of the warriors of today.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
TIDTAYA SINUTOKE (ฑิตยา สินุธก) (Composer) is a Thai born, NYC-based composer, writer, and musician. Her works include themes of self-discovery, gender issues, travel, social injustice and companionship. Composition credits include: Clouds Are Pillows for the Moon (Yale Institute for Music Theatre, ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop, Kilroy’s Honorable Mention List), Hart Island Requiem (Civilians R&D, EtM Con Edison Composer-in-Residence), Gender Nation, Crossing Borders (CAP21 Residency), Sunrise Prayer (Johnny Mercer Writers Colony), Water is Life (NYMF, dir. by Jonathan McCrory) and Yellow Cycle. She is a recipient of the Composer-Librettists Studio at New Dramatists, Johnny Mercer Songwriter Projects, New York Foundations for the Arts (NYFA) IAM Mentoring Program, Robert Rauschenberg Residency, Anna Sosenko Assist Trust Grant, EtM Con Edison Composer-in-Residence and Jonathan Larson Grant. TY DEFOE Defoe (Giizhig) (Books & Lyrics Writer) from the Oneida and Ojibwe Nations is book writer and lyricist. A interdisciplinary artist and musician, Ty aspires to an integral approach to artistic projects, social justice, indigeneity and environmentalism. Ty’s global cultural arts and repertoire consist of: the Millennium celebration in Cairo, Egypt with the Call for Peace Drum and Dance Company; traveling throughout Greece, Japan, Turkey for the Ankara International Music Festival and Festival of World Cultures in Dubai. Some of his favorite visits have been to his own community where he learned to hoop dance and eagle dance, and play a variety of wooden flutes. Ty is a frequent guest artist at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. and New York City. Awards include: NEA/NEFA for reconstructing and indigenizing, Drum is Thunder, Flute is Wind, First American in the Arts Outstanding Performance Award, First Americans in the Arts Scholarship Award, an Indigenous Heritage Festival Award, Robert Rauschenberg Artist in Residence, Olga J. and G. Roland Denison visiting artist Professorship of Native American Studies at Central Michigan University, 2016 Institute of the American Indian Arts Visiting Artist and Jonathan Larson Award winner (with Sinutoke). Ty created book and lyrics on Clouds Are Pillows for the Moon (with composer Tidtaya Sinutoke at Yale Institute for Musical Theatre; ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop), Hart Island Requiem (The Civilians R&D Group), Crossing Borders (CAP 21), Red Pine (Native Voices at the Autry; IAIA of Santa Fe), The Way They Lived (Co-collaboration with The Civilians at the Met Museum), Ajijaak on Turtle Island (Ibex Puppetry at La MaMa Theater, NYC, Lied Center for the Performing Arts, NE), Sunrise Prayer (Johnny Mercer Writers Colony), New York Musical Theater festival commission, Water is Life(dir. MADELINE SAYET (Director) is a director of new plays, classics and opera who believes the stories we pass down inform our collective possible futures. For her work as a director she was named to Forbes’ 2018 30 Under 30 List in Hollywood & Entertainment, and has been honored as a TED Fellow, a MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow, a National Directing Fellow, and a recipient of The White House Champion of Change Award. A member of the Mohegan nation, she was deeply influenced by the stories and oral traditions passed down to her by her great-aunt Gladys Tantaquidgeon, former Medicine Woman, and her mother Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel, current Medicine Woman. Her recent work includes: Qui Nguyen’s She Kills Monsters (Connecticut Repertory Theater), As You Like It (Delaware Shakespeare), The Winter’s Tale (Amerinda/ HERE Arts), Poppea (Krannert Center, Illinois), The Magic Flute (Glimmerglass), Macbeth (NYC Parks), Sliver of a Full Moon (various), Daughters of Leda (IRT/Culture Project), Powwow Highway (HERE), Miss Lead (59e59), The Tempest (Various). CARL HOLVICK (Producer) is an MFA/MBA Candidate with the Yale School of Drama and School of Management. He produced the Satellite Festival for the Yale Cabaret’s 50th Anniversary Season which culminated in 19 interdisciplinary performances and exhibits spanning 7 venues, curated by Jeremy O. Harris and Amauta Marston-Firmino. Carl also produced evensong, an augmented reality sound installation created by Michael Costagliola. Prior to coming to the East Coast, Carl served as Education Director for the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival where he managed summer camps, developed educational residencies and directed and produced the statewide Shakespeare On Tour program. Carl was a faculty instructor for Globe Education Academy and Shakespeare Works When Shakespeare Plays with the Globe in London. This fall, he will be on fellowship at Signature Theatre working under Executive Director, Harold Wolpert.
